From Research to Revenue: The Case for Scaling UK Bio-based Innovation

New BB-REG-NET research shows that the UK’s world-class Bio-based research and innovation are not yet translating into economic growth at scale

The UK is home to world-class research, cutting-edge universities, and a thriving innovation ecosystem—but when it comes to growing successful Bio-based businesses, we’re leaving value on the table.

New research funded by BB-REG-NET has revealed that only 24% of UK Bio-based companies operate internationally, yet these few account for nearly double the revenue and job creation compared to their UK-only peers. High-potential businesses are moving abroad to scale—seeking better infrastructure, investment, and regulatory environments.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

If we close the gaps in scale-up support, we could unlock over 4,000 new jobs and £300–£500 million in additional gross value added (GVA) for the UK economy. Key actions include:

  • Enhancing access to scale-up infrastructure
  • Introducing patient capital and scale-up tax incentives
  • Streamlining regulations for novel technologies
  • Strengthening partnerships between government, academia, and industry
  • Investing in a new generation of “scale-up scientists”

The message is clear: with decisive action now, the UK can become a global leader in sustainable Bio-based innovation—powering green growth and a resilient, net-zero future.
