Summary:

We held a network launch event for the Continuous BioFlow Network at Heriot-Watt University on Friday 10th January 2025. The event had two plenary speakers (Prof Ian Baxendale from Durham University, and Dr Sarah Cleary from HydRegen), and a series of talks from attendees interested in collaboration alongside UK-based research hubs (IBioIC, BDC, Supergen, Future BRH). This was supported by a student poster session outside. The event was very well attended, with over 100 registrations and ~80 attendees on the day making it a huge success.

Aims:

To Establish a new network focussed on advancing the research agenda of continuous flow biocatalysis and biomanufacturing in the UK by bringing together a range of stakeholders from different sectors. The funding was to be used for a launch event in January 2025.

Outcomes:

The Continuous BioFlow Network was launched in January 2025 thanks to funding from BBNet. The network aims further the research agenda of continuous flow biocatalysis and biomanufacturing, with biomass and biorefinery approaches key underpinning technologies. The launch meeting brought together a range of academic and industrial stakeholders from a range of career stages, with extended networking sessions to permit discussion of new collaborations. Despite being held in Edinburgh in January, the cold was not enough to put off up to 80 attendees from across the UK, helping to demonstrate the need for this network to the UK biomanufacturing sector. The network launch is going to be followed up with a second meeting in January 2026 and other events (virtual and in-person). To be kept informed, please join the LinkedIn group and mailing list!

Impact:

The network now has an online presence and already over 100 members from academia and industry across the UK. We are now expanding to include European members also.
