Summary

BioVerse is a multi-disciplinary network with a vision to achieve bench to pilot scale transformation of biomass into high value chemicals using novel process technologies. emphasising place-based approaches. The aim of the network is to leverage existing knowledge on biomass valorisation, develop localised scale-up solutions through the biorefinery concept and accelerate the transition to net zero within the fine chemical sector. The network will bring together multiple areas of scientific expertise (engineering, natural sciences, social sciences), entrepreneurs, policymakers and community groups. Disciplinary scope aims to bridge chemical engineering with chemistry and biology to alleviate the current challenges with biomass valorisation such as feedstock heterogeneity, process scale-up and downstream processing. We aim to take a place-based approach to sourcing and processing the biomass within the UK enabling localised impact measurement (economic, environment and social). A distributed approach to processing biomass further allows access to local supply chain and knowledge exchange creating a network of resilient manufacturing zones, eliminating the uncertainty in continuous availability of biomass. This project closely aligns closely with the scope of the call to develop disruptive technologies and creative solutions with ‘Engineering at Heart’. This network will bridge the gap between fundamental science of valorising biomass and scale-up challenges. The project also aligns with the BBNet scope of enabling utilisation of biomass and biotechnology to achieve net zero targets in the chemical industry and sustainable manufacturing. The funding was utilised to organise a workshop at the University of Nottingham to facilitate discussion on thematic areas and develop a proposal for a BBSRC Network grant submission.

Aims

  1. Facilitate multi-disciplinary collaborations focused on the development of place-based solutions for biomass valorisation.
  2. Evaluate the economic, social, and environmental impact of decentralised biomass processing.
  3. Promote local supply chains and create a network of resilient manufacturing zones.
  4. Drive continuous knowledge exchange and cultivate the next generation of skilled professionals and experts in biomass valorisation.

Outcomes

We developed a BBSRC Network Application BioVerse – A place-based approach to biomass valorisation in the UK. The funding allowed us to bring together a team of researchers from Universities of Nottingham, Bath and Surrey, CEH and industry partners Bridge Farm and Agri Foods to develop the proposal and evaluate the opportunities to decentralise processing of biomass. We have submitted the application in September 2024 followed by responses to the reviewers in February 2025 and are expecting the outcome in May 2025. We also engaged with the existing NIBB networks and identified a potential to map relevant technologies to process biomass originating in different regions in the UK.

Impact

The network envisions a future where place-based biotechnological solutions unlock the potential of the UK’s diverse biomass resources, enhancing regional sustainability and resilience. It aims to leverage existing knowledge in sustainable biomass valorisation, promote disruptive solutions in industrial biotechnology, and accelerate the fine chemical sector’s transition to net zero. It seeks to create regional hubs that bring together academic, industry, and community stakeholders to develop tailored strategies for utilising each region’s specific biogenic wastes.
